There are four pitches in Mandarin and there is variation in pitches under a special condition. What does that mean? When there are two consecutive words of the third pitch, the first word will be changed to the second pitch while the second word will remain as the third pitch. The reason behind is that it is very difficult to pronounce two consecutive words of the third pitch.
